Taf Bargoed Wetlands

Challenge Fund 23-25

Merthyr Tydfil LNP have won a prestigious BALI National Landscape Award for their Taf Bargoed wetland development, which was created through the Local Places for Nature Challenge Fund in 2025.

Working with Inscapes landscaping engineers, a marshy site was transformed into a series of ponds and wildlife habitats. This increased biodiversity in Parc Taf Bargoed. As a sustainable urban drainage design, the project also served the very important purpose of alleviating flooding in the surrounding residential areas. In recent years, the streets behind the park had flooded multiple times. Since this work was carried out, surplus rainfall has been funnelled into the ponds and nearby homes are no longer at risk of flooding.

The work began with topographical surveys and ecological assessments to ensure the existing wildlife was protected. Once the best way of redirecting water was established, further design elements were added. Three ponds were created to support local wildlife and attract other species which could use the ponds as habitat; focusing on birds, amphibians and invertebrates.

The ponds were lined for longevity, and native freshwater plants were added to provide habitat for wildlife. Native trees were planted at the perimeter.

An elevated boardwalk was created to allow a circular route around the site, giving different viewpoints which could be enjoyed by local residents. Traditional drystone walls and a sculptural feature were added to the entrance of the site. A bat tower and bug hotel were also erected, allowing even more species to enjoy the site.

Thoughtful projects like this one serve multiple purposes. Supporting nature and recreation, but also mitigating some of the impacts of extreme weather. As the climate continues to change, these types of projects will become increasingly important.
