Gwynedd AC Marine Taxonomy Roadshow

Marine Resilience Challenge Fund Gwynedd 25-26

Gwynedd LNP in partnership with North Wales Wildlife Trust and Amgueddfa Cymru delivered workshops to equip volunteers with the knowledge to feel confident identifying marine animals, allowing them to monitor our shores and record climate change indicator species and invasive non-natives.

The workshops were delivered by qualified taxonomists, and focused on identifying bivalves, which are important for ocean and climate health. They filter feed, cleaning our seas, and they sequester carbon in their shells. Some British species are sensitive to changing sea temperatures and their habitats are at risk from invasive species, so it is important to be able to identify and record them accurately. Some invasive species look very similar to native species and being able to precisely detect non-native invasives is key.

Across a weekend at Treborth Botanic Garden, a mix of presentations and hands-on sessions allowed Shoresearch volunteers to apply the knowledge provided in the talks and develop their skills. After having taken part in these sessions, participants reported feeling more confident in their abilities to carry out accurate surveys. They will also share their learning with other Shoresearch volunteers, allowing further upskilling across North Wales.
