Creating a Community Orchard in Aberystwyth

A new orchard was established at MHA Hafan y Waun Care Home in Aberystwyth through the Local Places for Nature initiative. Led by Orchard Daughters – Merched y Berllan, the project aimed to enhance biodiversity, encourage food growing, and provide a shared green space for residents and the local community.

A Practical Approach to Green Space
The orchard was planned to maximise environmental benefits while being easy to maintain. Medium-sized rootstock has been chosen to keep the trees manageable and accessible. Apple and plum trees have been spaced appropriately to allow them to be pruned at the appropriate times, as plums must only be pruned in the summer.

Zone A, along Waunfawr Road, features a row of plum trees that bloom in early spring and fruit in late summer, creating an attractive entrance to the site. Zone B, towards the western crest, is dedicated to apple trees, providing a variety of fruit through the autumn months.

Encouraging Biodiversity
Beyond fruit production, the orchard supports local wildlife. Existing hedgerows provide natural wind protection, and additional flowering plants have been introduced to attract pollinators. A willow hedge has also been included to offer shelter and mulch material, creating a more resilient ecosystem.

Community Involvement and Future Plans
The orchard has been designed to be a shared resource, offering opportunities for residents and volunteers to take part in activities like fruit harvesting, juicing, and orchard maintenance. Workshops on tree care and biodiversity provide learning opportunities for those interested in developing new skills.

Future plans include expanding the growing space with vegetable beds and securing funding for fruit processing equipment, enabling the care home to make better use of the harvest.

A Long-Term Investment
This orchard is intended to be a lasting resource, providing fresh produce and a pleasant outdoor space for years to come. With a clear management plan in place, it will continue to benefit both the local environment and the community.
